Toronto Catholic District School Board

High School Debate Championships

On Saturday, December 1, James Cardinal McGuigan CHS hosted the fourth annual TCDSB High School Debate Championship. Five schools from across the board participated in a series of animated debates on the following resolution, Be it resolved that (BIRT): the Notwithstanding Clause should be removed from the Canadian Charter of Rights ad Freedoms. Debaters prepared speeches for two rounds on this topic and then debated an improvised resolution for the final round. This year saw a very strong and seasoned team from Michael Power/St. Joseph’s place first and second overall with Team A taking top honours. Bishop Allen Academy and Mary Ward CSS filled out the remaining top two spots. The top three debaters this year came from MPSJ, Alexander Lynch in first place, followed by Hewitt McGaughey, Daria Furtak and Matthew Morrison in that order. Mr. Marco Summaria and Ms. DoRego, debate coaches from Cardinal McGuigan said, “Hosting and participating in these types of events raises our school profile and enriches the high school experience for our students”.
A special thanks goes to JCM principal Mr. Anthony Bisceglia for generously offering to host the tournament at his school and to tournament organizers Mike Da Costa from Brebeuf College, who handled the tabulations and Mr. Santino Bellisario from De La Salle College who provided support.
