Child Abuse Prevention Month!
October is Child Abuse Prevention Month – a time when we reflect on the importance of reporting child abuse and neglect. While it is the legal duty of doctors, teachers and others who work with children to report suspected child abuse, it is important that everyone is aware of the signs and knows how critical it is to take action. This year, we have once again partnered with the three other CASs in Toronto to create video segments answering some of the important questions about making a report to a CAS. We hope that you will take a moment to view the videos and learn more about this important responsibility.
We have also included links to a wealth of other material on our website, including the signs of child abuse and neglect, examples of abusive behavior, a guide to sexual abuse and FAQs to answer your questions about calling a children’s Aid Society. Remember, we all have a duty to report child abuse and neglect. Learn more at: www.torontoccas.org/whentocall.
The Duty to Report
Child Abuse Prevention Month is an important time of year when the Catholic Children’s Aid Society reminds the community of its responsibility to speak out for children who are victims of abuse or neglect.
Through our annual Child Abuse Prevention Campaign, we collaborate with Toronto’s Children’s Aid Societies to spread awareness of the signs of child abuse and neglect and the critical role of community members in reporting any concern that a child may be in need of protection.
The campaign is a call for neighbours, families, friends and professionals to speak up for the most vulnerable members of the community - our children. Approximately 90% of the calls we receive about child abuse and neglect are from individuals and professionals.
For more information, this Child Abuse Prevention Brochure is a great resource which details the various types of abuse children and youth may be faced with, the process of making a phone call to report and information on the signs of abuse.
In addition, further information about child abuse and reporting is available on our website. Remember, we all have a duty to report child abuse and neglect and ensure that our children are safe and cared for.
If you have not already, we hope you will like our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter and let your friends and family know about this resource. Each day we will be sending out tips, information, links to relevant articles and other resources to help everyone understand the signs of child abuse and how to report it.
