On Tuesday May 14, 2019, the Toronto Catholic District School Board hosted an Indigenous Law Symposium at the Catholic Education Centre located at 80 Sheppard Avenue East from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm. Teachers in grades 7 - 12 were invited to attend this incredible learning opportunity to hear Indigenous voices providing legal insight on Indigenous content in the enhanced Social Studies, History and the Canadian World Studies curricula that focuses on Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Our keynote speaker was Bernd Christmas, who is a recognized and accomplished leader in the Indigenous community and the first Mi’kmaw to become a lawyer in Canada. Other presenters included Fred Bartley, assistant Crown Attorney for the Ministry of the Attorney General (Ontario) and lead Crown in the Aboriginal persons court, also known as the Gladue Court.
