About Our Psychological Services

The Psychology Department of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) supports all children, youth, and families within the TCDSB to access the learning, behavior, and mental health supports needed to thrive in school and at home. The department includes Psychologists and Psychological Associates in School Psychology or School and Clinical/Counseling Psychology.

Our department members hold a Master's Degree or Ph.D. and come from diverse cultural backgrounds and languages to help service the TCDSB population. Additionally, our members have specialized training and are registered and in good standing with the College of Psychologists of Ontario or​​ are working towards becoming registered. They are also members of the Special Services team in each TCDSB school. This team is formed by a Psychologist or Psychological Associate, a Social Worker, a Speech and Language Pathologist, and an Assessment and Programming Teacher.

How To Access Psychological Services

The process to request psychological services begins with the school administrator. The administrator schedules a meeting, a Case Conference (CC) or a School-Based Student Learning Team (SBSLT) meeting to discuss the student’s strengths and needs. Then the psychologist provides recommendations from a psychological and ethical perspective in the best interest of the student. If the student is under 18 years old, informed parental consent is required.

Psychological Services for Students

  • ​Comprehensive psychological assessments.
  • Adaptive functioning assessments.
  • Diagnosis​ and intervention.
  • Cognitive screenings for the purpose of identification and placement in TCDSB Intensive Support Programs (ISP).
  • Primary prevention programs, individual and group mental health intervention and postvention, individual consultation, and treatment for chronic and severe developmental problems. (Using the Three-Tier Approach​ to Student Mental Health).​
  • Crisis Intervention (trained in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training - ASIST).
  • Risk and threat assessments.
  • Liaison with other agencies in the community when appropriate, to ensure comprehensive service delivery to students, parents, and teachers with whom they collaborate​n to support the student.
  • Support developing appropriate safety plans.
  • Review of outside reports for the purpose of identification and placement.
  • Identification, placement, and review (IPRC​) of exceptional pupils that meet the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) and the Ministry of Education criteria for a Learning Disability or any other exceptionality recognized by the Ministry of Education (Autism, DHH, BLV, Language Impairment, Mild Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Disabilities, Physical Disabilities, and Multiple Exceptionalities).

Psychological Services for Parents

  • ​To help understand the student's learning and socioemotional profile.
  • To support parents and teachers in the implementation and monitoring of recommendations and plans.
  • To provide psychoeducation on a variety of school-related problems and issues, such as behavior management and parenting skills.
  • To support managing crisis, developing partnerships with parents and teachers to promote healthy school environments.

Psychological Services for Schools

  • To understand educational policies and issues to work within the educational system.
  • Consultation with teachers and administrators to address concerns related to an individual student or class.
  • To provide recommendations on how to adapt the curriculum and make accommodations to meet a student’s learning style, cognitive profile, developmental level, or behavioral needs.
  • To understand the views points of the many stakeholders in the educational system to understand the student's needs.
  • To collaborate with school and special services staff in formulating appropriate recommendations, plans, and achievable goals for students.
  • In-service psycho-education through district-wide professional development for educational staff on issues such as child and adolescent development, mental health literacy and support, behavior support and classroom management, exceptionalities, suicide prevention, and assessment.
  • Assisting in developing, implementing, or consulting with system-wide intervention programs (e.g. positive behavior interventions and supports, conflict resolution, social skills, bullying prevention programs, dropout prevention, violence prevention, crisis intervention and response, alternative education programs).​
