October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month

Did you know? Individuals with Learning Disabilities
·        are intelligent (have, by definition, average to above average intelligence)
·        absorb, remember, understand and express information differently
·        which impacts on their academic and/or social-emotional functioning
·        can succeed with the right intervention/accommodations.

TCDSB supports students with LD in different ways, such as

·        providing a range of special education placement options
·        offering focused interventions in the area of literacy and mathematics
·        assisting teachers by offering specialized professional knowledge and skills
·        disseminating information about LD and mental health to demystify and de-stigmatize LD
·        focusing on the development of self-awareness and self-advocacy

Presentations and inservices

Members of the Psychology Department are regularly involved in presentations and inservices to parents, students and staff.

Topics include mental health awareness and literacy, reducing stigma around mental illness, resilience and other relevant issues.  One example is our annual school psychology symposium in February, for Psychology Month. Stay tuned for information about the 2015 event.

Professional Development Activies

Members of the Psychology Department participated in a presentation on developing self advocacy skills in students on October 3, 2014. They will take part in training sessions on threat assessment, cross battery assessment, and other topics as well in 2014-15.
