Learning at Humber River Hospital

WOW! What a day for the students completing a co-op placement at Humber River Hospital (HRH)!
On Tuesday, instead of going to their in-patient or out-patient units, students participated in a Reach Ahead Day of Learning which included a talk on Ethical Considerations & a tour of the Command Centre.
The students spent half their day working with the Humber River Hospital on-site ethicist, Rosanna Macri.  During this portion of the morning, students were introduced to Ethical Considerations topics such as value systems, moral dilemmas and ethical reasoning.  Using the ethical decision making framework, IDEA2, the co-op students worked in groups to review case studies and together unpack and address the dilemmas encountered.
The students were then treated to a tour, by HRH’s Director of Community Relations Joe Gorman, of some parts of the hospital rarely seen by the public.  These locations included both Command Centres as well as the “back halls” where the robots roam!  In the highly advanced, date driven “mission control” that is the Command Centre, students learned how staff, with the assistance of technology, help to meet the needs of patients, staff and community.
A huge thanks to Rosanna and Joe for showing the health care professionals of tomorrow how high tech and low tech work hand in hand to deliver exceptional patient care.
Thank you as well to the staff in volunteer services who coordinate the co-op placements for organizing this day for the co-op students!
Students in grades 11 and 12 interested in completing a co-op placement at Humber River Hospital should see one of the teachers in the Cooperative Education Department in their school and inquire about the application process.
