Godspell has 10 lead characters; 5 male and 5 female that act, sing, and must be comfortable moving energetically. Character descriptions and vocal ranges are outlined below.
Vocal Ranges and Character Descriptions:
Character Vocal Range Descriptions
Jesus Tenor H#: He is charismatic, high energy, charming, funny, gentle, but with strength. Others instinctively follow him.
John the Baptist/John  Baritone He is the most ardent disciple who begins to question and rebel. He is charismatic and handsome. He is the most "serious" and intellectual of the group and has a good sense of physical comedy.
Lamar  Tenor  He is not the brightest in the bunch and is a little slow on the uptake. He has a great sweetness and innocence about him. He must be a very good singer.
Jeffrey Tenor: He is impish and playful and has a very high level of energy.
Herb  Baritone He does not sing any real solos, but should be able to carry baritone harmonies. He is the comedian; the class clown. He can do a hundred voices and imitations. He is more of a comedian than a vocalist.
Robin Alto She is a bit of a tomboy who is open and sweet.
Peggy Alto  She is the shy one with an “earth mother” kind of warmth to her. She is sometimes a little slow to get things, but when she does, she commits all the way.
Sonia  Alto She is sassy, slightly cynical and she is the most urban of the group.
Gilmer Mezzo She is the female equivalent of the class clown. She is goofy, a cut-up and is more of a comedian than a vocalist (sings the least).
Joanne - Soprano She is the confident one who is a show-off. She is the first one to volunteer, but often before she really understands what is going on.
