Ashley Tedesco, graduate of Venerable John Merlini Catholic School and Father Henry Carr CHS (2013); and Luigi Marchione, graduate of St. Jerome Catholic School and Chaminade College School (2011) are this year's recipients of the Peter Balciunas Memorial Award. This award was made possible through the generosity of the Balciunas family, who created the scholarship in memory of Peter Balciunas, a former principal of the TCDSB.
The award is granted each year to a student of the Faculty of Education at York University - TCDSB Catholic Education Centre campus to encourage and support him or her in the pursuit of studies in preparation for teaching in a Catholic school. This year, the Balciunas family chose to split the award between two students.
Ashley is a responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life by supporting various charitable initiatives. Luigi is a caring family member who attends to family, school, parish, and the wider community. Both candidates were selected from a number of applicants for a number of attributes, including their commitment to Catholic education, their compassion and dedication to life-long learning and for living the Gospel values.
Ashley and Luigi were presented with a cheque on April 11th at the Catholic Education Centre which will cover a portion of the cost of tuition for the program
