Toronto Catholic District School Board

Flora Cifelli Named Outstanding Principal
by The Learning Partnership

Flora Cifelli

TCDSB congratulates Flora Cifelli, Principal at Dante Alighieri Academy for being named one of “Canada’s Outstanding Principals” by the Learning Partnership.  She was among 40 school administrators from across the country who are being recognized, and the sole recipient from the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

The award recipients will participate in a five-day Executive Leadership Training Program at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management where they will be able dialogue and reflect on leadership issues with other leaders from the educational, social, cultural and business communities.

Flora Cifelli started her career with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) in 1994 as an English teacher at Archbishop Romero. During her time there, she taught a multitude of courses, spanning all grade levels and all pathways. Later, while at Archbishop Romero, she took on the role of Department head of English and then moved to a more formal leadership position as the Vice Principal of Cardinal Newman in 2003. These 13 years of leadership have served her well, providing opportunities to work with numerous dedicated administrators who have served as role models. “They have fostered my many gifts and I am in gratitude to them,” says Ms. Cifelli.

Continuing Education has always been her passion. Beginning as a teacher and then later on becoming the Supervising Principal has afforded her the ability to see the first-hand the inner workings of the program. She takes great pride in the work that has been done, particularly The Grade 9 Summer School Transition Program, for which she continues to serve as Principal. Under her leadership, the program has grown to span all high schools and to include a streamlined curriculum.

Most recently, she had the pleasure of working with the department of International Education, fostering relationships with Dante’s sister school in China and opened her doors to host students from China. Last March, students and staff from Dante Alighieri travelled to China, and the experience has broadened their perspectives and enriched their lives.

“I am humbled to be one of this year’s recipients of Canada’s Outstanding Principal,” says Ms. Cifelli. “I would like to thank the Learning Partnership and those who supported my nomination. This recognition warms my heart.”
