5th Block 20th Anniversary

The year 2019 marked 20 years of the Toronto Catholic District School Board's 5th Block Program, a literacy program that has been offered to primary students who need a boost with their reading skills.

On Wednesday, December 4th, the founders of the 5th Block program, along with parents, volunteers, current and former 5th block students and staff, Trustees and senior staff, and members of the community gathered together to celebrate 20 years of the 5th Block Program supporting students in reaching their literacy goals. A 5th Block video highlighting the success of the program was also shared.

The 5th Block program is intended for students in Grades 1 and 2 who require additional support in reading and are experiencing difficulty developing foundational skills. The program was first piloted in 1998 and has been recently adapted to include a numeracy focus. Currently, there are 42 programs running in 44 schools. To date, over 27,000 students have benefitted from this program.

5th Block teachers work with small groups of students (max. 6 students per group) for 60 minutes per day for 16 weeks. While in the program, students receive intensive, explicit instruction. Student progress is tracked and monitored. Results from last Spring indicate that Grade 2 students made gains in 6 running record levels.
The TCDSB is grateful to the founders, staff, mentors, parents and volunteers of the 5th Block Program for their passion for learning and for their unwavering support of our students.
