Labour Update 2021

The Toronto Elementary Catholic Teachers’ (TECT) Union has announced that “Work to Rule” strike action will begin at all Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) elementary schools on May 25, 2021 (Tuesday).

Since the conclusion of centrally bargained collective agreements at the provincial level with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), the Board has successfully completed a new local collective agreement with our High School Teachers in the Toronto Secondary Unit (TSU).

“Work-to-Rule” strike action is a partial withdrawal of services where teachers may choose not to participate in specified school-related activities, including:

  • Not providing comments on report cards
  • Not participating in school graduation ceremonies or yearbook activities
  • Not participating in the preparation/competition of Grade 8 to Grade 9 Transition reports
  • Not participating in grade to grade transition meetings

All of our elementary schools remain open, and academic programing will continue to be delivered to our students, during this work to rule action. We expect that the daily activities of our students during remote learning will not be affected.

The Board’s leadership team is working together with Principals and Vice-Principals to minimize any negative impact on regular school operations. We also remain committed to achieving a new local collective agreement with our Toronto Elementary Catholic Teachers’ (TECT) Union.

Parents/guardians are valued partners in their child’s education, and TCDSB appreciates families' consideration as we work through these issues. Updates will be provided to students' families as they arise.
