Toronto Catholic District School Board

​The TCDSB 3rd Annual High School Debate Championship



We invite your school to participate in the third annual Toronto Catholic District School Board High School Debate Championship on Saturday, December 2 at Loretto Abbey.
The official resolution to be debated is as follows:


Be it resolved that (BIRT): Ontario schools should continue to
be named after John A. MacDonald.


In accordance with the rules of cross-examination debate, each participating school is invited to send one team comprised of 4 students (from Grades 9 to 12) to compete at  this event. Two of your students will debate for the Affirmative side of the resolution and two will debate for the Negative side. The championship tournament will consist of two  rounds of prepared debates and one round of impromptu debate. Please complete the registration form in this package by Friday, November 17th and email it to one of the following addresses: or

A $40 cheque made payable to the “Ontario Pro-Con Debate Forum” will register your team. On the attention line please note “TCDSB High School Debate Championship 2017.” Along with this letter, you will also receive a schedule for the day and support materials to prepare your team, including tournament rules and standard speaking times. Each teams will also need to bring two adults to serve as supervisors and judges for the debates.

Finally, we ask, if possible, that you bring one student to act as a time-keeper and moderator for the tournament. Please see the attached forms. Students should dress business professional for the tournament. We look forward to seeing you at Loretto Abbey for what will prove an exciting day of debate.


Attention:  Elementary School Principals and Gifted Coordinators
Teachers and students from elementary schools in the board are also welcome to attend and observe any or all of the three rounds of debate at the tournament. Debating is a wonderful way to expose students to public speaking, critical thinking, collaboration and spirited competition.
