Toronto Catholic District School Board

World Human Rights Day

December 10

Message from the Director of Education
and Chair of the Board

Human Rights Day

“Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government.
They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. – St. Mother Teresa

December 10th is Human Rights Day, and this year marks the 70th anniversary of the inception of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We are fortunate and blessed to live in a country that values human rights and protects every Canadian’s right to be treated equally and without discrimination under the law.

As a Catholic community that acknowledges the need for all to feel they belong, and aspires to fostering an inclusive learning and work environment, it is essential for us to practice our fundamental values of equity, justice and respect. Our mission reminds us that it is our responsibility as Catholic educators and leaders, to teach and guide our students to become compassionate and responsible members of society. By encouraging them to put their faith into action, we are empowering our students, staff and parents to stand up in support of social justice.

Our Catholic teachings and monthly virtues promoted in our schools reinforce the concept that we are one human family, regardless of our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and other differences. We take great consolation in witnessing how our students take on leadership roles to transform their world for the better through initiatives in their local schools and beyond.

Throughout the world, we pray for those who are being denied their basic God-given human rights, and hope that world leaders will be inspired to use their power to spark positive change in our world. Let us also pray for all our young people who will play a vital role in ensuring that human rights are preserved, protected and advanced in the future.

Sincerely,
