Toronto Catholic District School Board

Religious Studies

The Department of Religious Studies at Madonna provides students with opportunities to reflect on their faith and how it fits into their lives. We challenge students to apply the Gospel values to modern issues and to examine how they can fulfill their obligation to live their faith by “seeking justice, doing good and walking humbly with God” (Micah 6:8).  Each grade gives students an opportunity to connect with organizations which can then serve as bridges for completing the required Ministry of Education community service hours.  At Madonna we offer a program that is based on the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations.  Through our activities and assignments, we strive to instill in our students that Catholic graduates differentiate themselves through their everyday actions.  Students are invited and encouraged to participate in the many extra-curricular events that put faith into action.

Our courses and retreats value the importance of learning through diverse and creative ways that include music, visual arts, dance, film, and a connection to current events.  We also emphasize the development of "21st century" learning skills:  collaboration, communication, knowledge construction, the use of information technology, real-world problem solving and self-regulation.

Finally, students have an opportunity to develop their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being through exploring many forms of prayer that may include rosary, taize, mindfulness meditation, labyrinth walks, liturgical dance, etc.
