As part of the experiential learning component of the Specialist High Skills Major – Health and Wellness Program, Madonna students attended the Gairdner Foundation Lectures at York University on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016. This exclusive event was for senior level science students across the City of Toronto and Madonna’s SHSM Health and Wellness students were selected to participate. The Gairdner Lectures provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear from cutting-edge scientists describing their outstanding achievements. This year, we were pleased to listen to lectures from the following scientists: Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier (Recipient of the Canada Gairdner International Award, 2016) and Dr. Gillian Hawker (Chair of the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto). The program gave students a first-hand experience of a University style lecture and it also gave them the opportunity to meet and ask questions to several award-winning professors and researchers.
Subsequent to attending the two-hour presentation, students participated in a campus tour with a health and wellness focus. Students also had the opportunity to speak with several university students about their transition from high school to post-secondary studies.
