Madonna's Specialist High Skills Major - Non-Profit students completed their Ethical Considerations certification on Thursday, November 10th at The Mary Ward Centre. As part of this experiential workshop, students used concrete examples and interactive activities to explore a variety of justice related issues including materialism, consumerism, inequality and greed, particularly in relation to our current environmental crisis. Students had the opportunity to examine ethical responsibility, focusing on the movement from charity to justice. Drawing upon wisdom of such figures as Pope Francis and Mary Ward, students were encouraged to challenge current modern day assumptions about what is necessary for “good life”. Using The Earth Charter as a framework, participants were challenged to creatively imagine new ways of engaging themselves, others and the world. By realizing that there are alternatives and hopeful ways to effect change, students were encouraged to develop their desire for justice. This event not only complemented and reflected the role and work of our SHSM program, but it was also an excellent opportunity to bring our community together to recognize our role as Catholic stewards for God’s creation and human dignity.

A special thank you to Ann McGowan and her team at the Mary Ward Centre for facilitating this unique opportunity for students!
