Madonna Wins Silver Medal in Robotics at Skills Canada National Competition

On June 1st students from Madonna’s robotics team traveled to Edmonton Alberta as part of Team Ontario to compete in the Skills Canada National Competition.

The national robotics competition is a two day event where students are tested on both programmed and remote-controlled robots. Madonna brought two remote-controlled robots to Edmonton named Bonnie and Clyde.  They played four minute games where they were required to pick up and lay out one foot sections of pipe as well as chase down ball bearings running loose on the court.

In round-robin play, Madonna finished first after 12 rounds due to highly efficient and skillful driving.  In the playoffs Madonna played and defeated teams from Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland to face off against Saskatchewan in the finals.  The final match ended in a 47 – 47 tie.  So a replay was run which again resulted in a 47 – 47 tie.  The next replay was timed.  The fastest team to finish would win.

Madonna’s steady nerves persevered and they edged out Saskatchewan in the remote-controlled category.  For the programmed category, which ran concurrently, teams had to build and code a robot from a kit to do three separate tasks.  Each task involved moving and manipulating small sections of pipe.  Madonna completed the first task and some of the next two.  Saskatchewan fared slightly better completing enough of the required elements to put them just ahead of Madonna and win first place.

Elisa Acerbi and Jodi Pita represented the Robotics team and it was with great pride that we watched these two young ladies walk onto the national stage holding the Ontario flag and receive the Silver Medal for Mobile Robotics representing not only the province but of course an all girls team from Madonna! Congratulations, ladies!

To be selected to Team Ontario the robotics team first had to win the TCDSB Tournament in March and then place first at the Provincial Competition in May.
