The Business Specialist High Skills Major program is a ministry approved program that provides students with opportunities to focus their learning on sector-specific courses as well as make relevant connections to the business world and gain specific knowledge and skills pertaining to business. The students complete the Business SHSM program during grades 11 and 12.  Upon completion of the program, students will receive their OSSD with an embossed red SHSM seal, a SHSM Record documenting the students’ achievements, and formal recognition on the Ontario Student Transcript.

During grades 11 and 12, the students will complete:

·       4 Business major credits (see list of available courses) SHSM Requirements Checklist.pdfSHSM Requirements Checklist.pdf

·       3 other required credits in English & Math

·       2 Co-op credits in the Business/technology sector

·       6 sector-recognized certifications and/or training courses/programs -

OTEC Service Excellence

CPR/FIRST AID/AED Training/Certificate

Counterfeit/Fraud Detection

Project Management

Public Speaking

Sector Partner Contextualized Experience

(ICE – Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship)

Ethical Considerations


·       Experiential learning and career exploration activities may include:

o   attendance at a retail shows (e.g., a home show or craft show), conference, or workshops (Direct Sellers Association) focusing on the business sector

o   a tour of local businesses such as Cadbury, Redpath, Distillery District, Financial District and the Toyota Plant.

o   participation in Canada’s Wonderland SPCE, Muskoka Woods and various businesses in the Muskoka area such as Touchstone Resort, Gravenhurst Opera House, Santa’s Village and Muskoka Brewery


·       Reach Ahead Experiences

o   participation in university/college tours and workshops.

o   a day of business at George Brown College.

o   participation in university/college fairs.

o   participation in OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) presentations.

o   participation in TCDSB Career Fair Day.


·       Essential Skills and Work Habits developed throughout the program and co-operative education.

Students may pursue career paths in all areas of Business/Technology such entrepreneurship, marketing, commerce, accounting, information technology, graphic arts, etc.





Choose Business SHSM on Career Cruising when selecting courses in grade 10.

Meet with a Business SHSM lead teacher or Guidance to ensure the required courses have been chosen.
