Sector Specific Training Today for Tomorrow – SPORTS - Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

The SHSM–Sports is a Ministry of Education specialized program that enables students to build a foundation of sports-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace.

Students take four sports major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills. They also complete cooperative education credits that provide authentic learning experiences in a workplace setting, enabling students to refine, extend, apply, and practice sector-specific knowledge and skills.

Another component of the program is Sector-recognized Certifications and/or Training courses/programs which requires students to complete a specified number of compulsory and elective sector-recognized certifications and/or training courses/programs.  Some examples include: First Aid and CPR, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), High Five, Officiating, Leadership, Conflict Resolution, Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE).

Another component of the program is Experiential learning and career exploration activities.  Experiential learning and career exploration opportunities relevant to the sector might include the following: a volunteer experience at a community sports facility or professional sports team event, participation in an exercise class at a fitness facility, a tour of an athletic facility, a day-long observation of an employee in the sports sector (an example of job shadowing), and attendance of a sports sector career fair.

Students also partake in Reach Ahead experiences which are opportunities to take the next steps along their chosen pathway.  For example, visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the Sports sector or observing a University or College class in a Sports-related program.  Students have visited the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, York University, Guelph University, Ryerson University, Humber College, and George Brown College exploring the Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Health Sciences programs.

Students in Sports SHSM have an interest in pursuing Post-Secondary studies in the fields of Fitness and Health Promotion, Kinesiology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Recreation Facility Management, Broadcasting, Sport and Event Marketing, Sport Management, Sport Business Management, Sports Journalism, Chemistry, Athletic Therapy, and Fitness/Personal Trainer and many more areas.

Once students complete the SHSM program and their post-secondary studies they will be seeking and exploring careers such as Kinesiologist, Health and Physical Education Teacher, Sports Journalist, Nutritionist, Sports Psychologist, Sports Public Relations and Communications, Personal Trainer, Recreation/Sport Program Instructor, and Sports Broadcaster to name a few.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) encourages you to focus your secondary school education toward a career area of your choice.  No matter whether you plan to go to work, apprenticeship, or college/university you can earn a SHSM Red Seal on your diploma. The SHSM Red Seal on your diploma lets employers and post-secondary education institutions know that you have knowledge, skills, and industry-recognized qualifications related to a particular career field.

Select this SHSM if you are interested in a Sports related career and get FIT FOR THE FUTURE!
