Kindergarten students participate in the full day instructional program .
Supervision is provided from 8:45 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Please do not drop off your child before 8:45 am or leave them past 3:30 as supervision will not be guaranteed.
Supervision while at school takes many forms. The staff including teachers, educational assistances and the lunch time supervisor are responsible for the supervision of the students. In the yard staff is present to provide on-site supervision. During lunch time, supervision is provided on each floor. Bus supervision is provided on arrival and departure. Other adults, including parents are not to be in the yard and will be asked to leave. Children need to be aware of who can and can’t be in the yard or building in order to keep them safe at all times.
Students who need to come indoors from the yard must ask the supervising staff for permission. During inclement weather conditions students will remain indoors in their own classroom area or vicinity. Students are not permitted in unsupervised areas (like the stairwells or bathrooms) for their own safety and well-being. Students may only leave the classroom when with the teacher’s knowledge and consent and accompanied by a buddy.
The primary goal of all staff at St. Teresa School is to develop inquisitive, independent, self-disciplined and motivated learners. Our staff fosters the growth, trust and self-respect of your child in co-operation with you. When students do fulfill their academic responsibilities teachers will proceed in the following manner:
Students will be required to make up missed work. Depending on the age of the child this might include a detention to make up missed work.
The parent/guardian will be informed (in the students’ agenda, through a note, or telephone call)
If the problem persists, teachers will arrange a case conference with the student, parent(s), resource personnel and the principal.
The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416) 393 5266 of a child’s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. The system requires full parental co-operation to be effective. The student shall bring a written note to the school (to be given to the classroom teacher) on the day of his/her return. When a child returns to school, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed and complete it within a reasonable length of time. Extended absences, for reasons other than health, require notification to the principal.
Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accurate attendance profiles. Consequences for tardiness will include making up missed time. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in school detentions (suspensions).
Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student’s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in advance of test situations.
Safe Arrival Program:
If a child does not arrive at school and a phone call, or note has not been received, there will be an attempt to alert parents by telephone at home, or at their place of employment. The purpose of this program is to provide a service for parents to check that their children have arrived at school safely. The program recognized that the ultimate responsibility for children rests with the parents. The board, or its employees are therefore not liable by law in carrying out of this service.
Unless there is an emergency the students will not be allowed to call their parents during the day. If a parent needs to talk to their children, the secretary will call them down so that the parent can communicate directly with their child.
A permission form with a parent/guardian signature shall be required for any trips. Verbal confirmation over the phone will not be accepted in its place. If students do not have a signed permission form he/she will NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE EXCURSION.
Appointments/ and Early Dismissal:
It is strongly recommended that appointments not be made during school hours. If this is not possible the student will require a note signed by the parent/guardian and bring it to school and give it to the secretary.
Parents must come to the office and sign their child out. If the child returns to school before the end of the day the parent must come to the office and sign the child back in. Please do not instruct you child to meet you in front of the school as your child will not be allowed to leave unless the parent/guardian signs the child out.
If you need to speak to your child’s teacher you are encouraged to phone ahead of time a set up an appointment with the teacher. This way the teacher will be able to provide you with a time during his/her planning time. This is to ensure that the teacher is in his/her class during the instructional time. Sometimes, information can be delivered over a phone call to the teacher.
All pupils are to be at their bus stop punctually. Students are to travel only on their designated bus. Pupils are to remain seated while the bus is in motion. Any activity that may distract the driver is not permitted as it endangers the safety of all. Pupils must be especially careful when leaving the bus. It is very important that the driver is able to see students. Transportation privileges will be revoked for any student whose behaviour poses a threat to the safety of others. Bus drivers will document and report to the office students failing to act safely on the bus.
The bus is an extension of the school and thus the same rules apply. Students who are signed up for bussing must take the bus everyday. They cannot pick and choose when they want to take the bus or walk home.
During lunch pupils are not permitted to leave the school grounds during lunch hour unless they have been signed out and are accompanied by a parent/guardian. Pupils are to eat their lunch in designated seats in the assigned classroom. During lunch or rainy day recess, students are to remain seated, speak quietly and/or be involved in rainy day games activities in their assigned lunch room.
a) If behaviour becomes a consistent problem with any child we will ask parents to make other arrangements for lunch time;
b) If a student leaves the school grounds without permission and knowledge of school personnel, consequences will be an immediate suspension. At St. Teresa, safety is our primary concern and will remain a priority.
The students are to remain in their designated yards (sections). If there is a situation where some of the yard needs to be shared it will be done so on a rotational basis. This might occur more during the fall and spring when the field and west yard are too wet to use.
Only tennis balls, and nerf balls are permitted on school property. Racquets, hockey sticks, bats, etc…ARE NOT PERMITTED.
Physical contact is NOT permitted on school property. Children must keep their hands to themselves. If a child becomes involved in a conflict with another student, words must be used to tell the other person to stop. If the conflict continues the child must go to the teacher on duty.
Appropriate Dress Code:
All students are expected to come to school following the appropriate dress code policy. Copies of the policy are available in the office. Students who are not appropriately dressed will be sent to the office where the administration will contact parents regarding their child’s clothing. Consequences might be to missing recess for younger children to having parents bring appropriate clothing for the student to change, to having parents pick up their child if there has been a repeated occurrence with the child not being appropriately dressed. The tops must be plain white and the bottoms navy blue. If a pull over or vest is worn it must be plain blue with not stripes, logos or writing on it.
Hats are not allowed to be worn in the building.
It is the parent’s duty and responsibility to ensure that each child is dressed appropriately following the dress code policy.
Sabrina’s Law, An Act to Protect Anaphylactic Pupils come into effect on January 1, 2006. Anaphlaxis is a severe, potentially life threatening allergic reaction often triggered by insect stings or certain types of food the most common being peanuts, tree nuts, seafood ,and/or egg and milk products. An anaphylactic shock episode is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately. Reaction symptoms may include hives, vomiting, drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, disorientation and even unconsciousness. Children experiencing an anaphylactic reaction will require an injected medication usually epinephrine through an Epi-Pen or Ana-Kit. Medical aid must also be obtained through a 9-1-1 call.
There are ways in which we can reduce the risk of an anaphylactic episode including food restrictions, no sharing of food, and checking labels to make sure treats are "safe to share". However, we must never assume that no allergen would ever enter the school and must remain vigilant. Children should also new taunt or invite someone to eat a food item that may trigger a reaction. Cross-contamination is also a real problem and care must be exercised.
If your child suffers from a life-threatening allergy make sure the school is aware and the paperwork is updated on an annual basis. Students are also advised to wear a "Medic-Alert" bracelet. If your child is in a class with an individual with a life threatening allergy you will be informed and we appreciate your support in creating a healthy and safe environment for all children each day.
The Immunization of School Pupils Act, 1982, states that "parents/guardians are required…to complete the prescribed program for immunization…"for each pupil. Failure to do so will result in suspension and/or expulsion from school by the Public Health Department. We therefore urge all parents/guardians to make sure that their children have the required up-to-date immunizations. Please be advised that an up-to-date immunization card is required for initial school registration.
Fire/evacuation drills are held on a regular basis during the first and last terms of the school year and on an "as needed" basis during the second or winter term. These drills reinforce the need for a quick and orderly exit from the building with the congregation in a safe area away from the building. It is therefore, not a good practice for the children to wear socks indoors; shoes must be worn at all times.
In the event of an evacuation of the school is necessary, the children will be relocated under the supervision of the principal and staff to a safe evacuation centre. Children will remain under the supervision of the school authorities until the disaster situation has ended or until you, the parent/guardian can safely pick up the child or children from the evacuation centre.
There may also be a possibility that the children and staff may be required to remain "locked down" in the main building for their own safety and security. Once again, we will take direction from the local police or fire authorities until such time that it is safe for us to exit the building or for others to enter.
Children should know their home phone number or how to contact their parents or babysitter in an emergency.
Lost and Found:
All students belongings should be marked with the student’s name. If articles are found, students will bring them to the Lost and Found box, which is situated in the foyer by the across from the drinking fountain on the second floor. All unclaimed articles will be donated to a charity at the end of each term.
All visitors must report to the main office upon their arrival. When picking up your children you must report to the office and we will call down your child and then sign him/her out. Visitors must sign in and wear a visitors badge while in the school. Parents are not permitted to come into the schoolyard. If you need to speak to your child you must report to the office and we will then call your child for you. This is done for safety reasons so that only staff members are interacting with the students when outside at recess/lunch.
There are inherent risks associated with activity and these risks vary with demands and nature of the activity as well as with the skill and ability of the participants. Physical injuries should be reported immediately to the nearest teacher or the office. Parents will be contacted if the injury is serious and/or requires medical attention beyond First Aid. It is imperative that the school has up to date information on how to contact you or an alternate in the event of an emergency or sudden illness. A Student Accident Insurance Plan is available to all students and application forms go home the first week of September. Parents are requested to mail these directly to the Insurance Company if participation in the plan is desired.
We are not permitted to dispense non-prescription medications to students nor can we administer any type of prescription medication unless we have signed authorization from both parent and the prescribing physician. Forms are available from the school office and will be kept on file. Any information regarding allergies or other illness should be on record in the office. From time to time requests are made to complete a course of medication during school hours. Please contact the school office before sending any medication to school with your child. It is not advisable to send your child to school with any medication in their bag to "take at lunch time" or take "if they have a headache."
The school needs to be aware of any health problems that might rise to an emergency situation. Please inform us if your child has any serious health problems with might restrict his/her activities at the school or any other conditions which might give rise to an emergency situation; for example, cardiac problems, epilepsy, respiratory difficulties, hemophilia, bee sting allergy, peanut allergy, etc. If your child requires an Epi-Pen or puffer, these should be made available to the school. The law now requires for one Epi-pen must be kept in the office and the child must carry one at all times in a fanny pack. Please check the expiry date on any and all products that may need to be kept at the school for the year. (Please also see section on Anaphylaxis)
If your child becomes ill at school, we will make every effort to contact you, as we do not have facilities to care for ill children. In a case where an injury or illness appears to be serious and immediate medical attention is required an ambulance will be called and we will make every effort to contact you.
From time to time we experience an outbreak of a communicable disease. Certain diseases are reportable to the Department of Health and we are required to report as soon as confirmation of a communicable and reportable disease is made by the parent. We may then be instructed to follow up with a letter to inform you of such an outbreak and any precautions required.
Head Lice are tiny, blood-sucking insects that reside on the human scalp and can spread from person to person during daily activities and/or transmitted by the sharing of hats, helmets, combs, brushes or hair accessories. Head lice are not uncommon in Daycare, summer camp or school settings. You can confirm the presence of the lice or nits through an examination of your child’s scalp and hair. The nits, or eggs, are firmly fastened to the hair shaft and are not easily moved. Dandruff and other skin debris are often irregular in shape and are easily dislodged. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to apply an appropriate treatment, which includes systematic nit removal to prevent re-infestation or transmission before the child can be readmitted to the classroom setting. If you find head lice or nits, please inform the school so we can in turn screen the other students for head lice.
Public Health Nurses are no longer assigned to the school by the Public Health Unit. If you have any health concerns regarding your child, please call your family physician or call your local Health Unit.
Opportunities for learning outside the classroom environment are encourage. School excursion not only support and enhance the curriculum but allow the students an opportunity to practice their social skills as well as be school ambassadors outside of the school setting. At the start of each school year you will be asked to sign a "Local Excursion Form" so that your child may participate in planned and spontaneous walking activities within the immediate school surroundings. Educational and curriculum related outings that take the students out of the school will require an additional consent form from you. There may be a cost involved with such excursion as well. Excursions are considered and reviewed on an annual basis for curriculum links, cost, and safety factors and are arranged by the teachers in consultation with the school administration.
School staff arranges for transportation and supervises any school based excursion. Adult volunteers to help with supervision may also be requested. It does happen, from time to time, that we have too many volunteers and regrettably cannot accommodate all the requests to volunteer. Any and all school trips beyond "local excursions", including sporting events will require additional signed consent. Intermediate students may, depending on circumstances, have the opportunity to participate in an overnight excursion. Students who cannot participate in any school based excursion are expected to come to school. A "day off" from school is not granted because a student does not go on an excursion!
Students are expected to adhere to the school code of conduct while on the excursion. They are expected to come prepared, which includes returning the signed permission forms and requirements of the excursion.
From time to time special presentations are arranged a class or classes which may require financial contribution towards the cost. The teacher will keep you informed of any such presentations and the required cost- but you can be sure it will be money well spent.
Extracurricular Activities and Athletics:
The students have many and varied opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities-activities that are considered to be "above and beyond" the regular instructional day. Such activities are voluntary both on the part of the students and staff. Extracurricular activities include both athletic and academic related activities such as soccer, W5H (general knowledge competition), student council, basketball, running clubs, and Volleyball. House league sports may also be offered during recess and lunch times as supervision permits.
All students are encouraged to try out for school teams or school activities. Participating in such activities not only builds school spirit and community but promotes the development of a healthy lifestyle and social skills. Try outs generally take place during school time including lunch hour. Practices are scheduled at different times and may involve your child staying after school hours or arriving before school hours.
Students participating in any school related events both in and outside of school are expected to demonstrate proper and respectful behaviour at all times. They should consider themselves representatives of St. Teresa Catholic School and conduct themselves accordingly:
1) Maintain a very good to high academic standard which includes work habits, assignments complete and up to date and classroom conduct. Teachers may deny a student participation in any sports event if the above obligations are not met.
2) Attend practices as schedule and participate fully with a positive attitude, outlook and demeanor.
3) Follow the instructions of the teacher/coach.
4) Students must conduct themselves in an exemplary manner, demonstrating Christian values. Students are considered to be representative of the school and must behave accordingly. Students must strive to understand, respect and follow the rules at all times.
5) Behave in ways that show respect for the other student team members, coaches, teachers, referees, parents/guardians and spectators as well as facilities and property. Enjoy the game as an individual as well as a team.
6) Exercise self control and self discipline at all times. Conduct themselves with honour and dignity.
7) Be cooperative and a "good sport" with a positive attitude. No put downs or negative comments. Be generous in victory and gracious in defeat.
8) Repeat all incidents of vandalism, theft, or injury promptly.
9) Students who are suspended will not participate in team activities while under suspension and future participation will be reviewed.
Students who are not participants may not attend any sports events as spectators. This includes after school tournaments, during the school day tournament; cross country or track and field meets. Some exceptions will be made for students accompanied by a parent at all times.
Program and Instruction
All school programs and instruction are based on The Ontario Curriculum expectations stated for each subject and grade as well as TCDSB approved programs and initiatives. Religion and Family Life form the backbone for all instruction programs and any materials used are approved by the Bishops for use in schools. A vocal music program is offered and supported by a vocal music teacher up to and including grade 6. For grades 7 and 8 students participate in instrumental music. French as a Second Language (FSL) instruction begins in grade 1 and continues to grade 8.
Students who require assistance and/or support beyond what can be reasonably provided in the regular classroom are supported through the Special Education program. Such students are typically indentified as exceptional through the Identification, Placement and Review Committee or IPRC. Some students will have an Individual Education Plan or IEP.
Accommodations to the learning environment may be provided or in some cases program modifications meaning a student is working on expectations from a grade level other than the one they are currently assigned to.
TCDSB also offers commencing in grade 5, a weekly pull-out program for students who are identified – gifted.
Assessment and Evaluation:
The TCDSB is committed to student and program assessment that is comprehensive, valid, information, equitable, collaborative, and redemptive in nature and focused on the pursuit of both creativity and excellence. The results of assessment will be reported to students and parents so as to provide appropriate feedback in accurate, relevant and accountable manner. We also recognize the unique abilities and styles of each child and underscore the belief that home and school are key partners.
Students participate in many and varied forms of assessment throughout the school year. Teachers use a variety of ongoing assessment techniques and strategies to develop a profile or pattern of performance to identify the level of achievement as per the Ministry of Education stated expectations for each grade as well as support the delivery of a distinctively Catholic curriculum in order to arrive at an evaluation of the performance and achievement. Assessment and evaluation will be based on the achievement levels outlined and provided in each curriculum document.
As the start of the year teachers will communicate to you and the students their work expectation, requirements and procedures. For example late work may be subject to a penalty, after a predetermined time no longer accepted or frequently incomplete homework may result in missed recess and/or a meeting with the parent/guardian. Assessment and class assignments require students to demonstrate their best independent and from time to time group learning. It is an ongoing and integral part of the classroom learning process. Mistakes are part of learning as long as effort is made to correct and not repeat the mistake!
From time to time students will also participate in board or province wide assessments. TCDSB students participate in a number of standardized tests including CCAT (Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test) in grade4, CAT/3 (Canadian Achievement Test, version 3) currently in grades 2, 5 and 7. These assessments compare an individual’s performance against a normative population and can help to identify areas of strength and weakness in either an individual or program area.
The Provincial Assessment in Reading, Writing and Mathematics, also known as EQAO, is administered to students in grades 3 and 6 typically in the month of May. Individual and school results are provided in the fall of the following school year.
Standardized and Provincial assessments can support and improve student learning and provide a further glimpse into your child as a learner. The goal is not to rank or compare students.
Teachers complete The Provincial Report Card 3 times a year with parent-teacher interviews offered twice during the year. The Provincial Report Card describes student achievement of the curriculum expectations in each subject as well as a separate section for reporting on the student’s development of learning skills required for effective learning.
The Provincial Guide for Grading defines the provincial standard as Level 3 or B or 70-79% which means that the student has demonstrated most of the required knowledge and skills outlined for the grade and achievement meets the provincial standard. Level 4 or A or 80%+ work exceeds the provincial standard for the grade and level 2 or level 1 work is below that provincial standard and only meets some of the required knowledge or in limited ways. An R or below 50% means that the student has not demonstrated the required knowledge and skills and signals the need for significant additional learning.
The Provincial Report Card consists of three pages and page 3 is to be signed and returned each term. Bear in mind that page 3 is a part of the Provincial Report and will be a part of your child’s Ontario School Record (OSR).
Work Habits and Study Skills
To support student success we all need to work together as a team. St. Teresa Catholic School strives to create and provide a caring and supportive environment that encourages all students to reach their full potential, values the individuality of each student, recognized the varied learning preferences and styles of each student and encourages all students to learn.
As parents you are the first and forever teachers and there are a number of ways in which you can support and nurture the learning and work that takes place in school. Be sure to:
1) Establish homework routines and expectations
2) Talk about school and the importance of a good education
3) Read with and to your child
4) Practice math skills
5) Monitor extra-curricular activities avoid "over doing it"
6) Praise genuine efforts; celebrate success
7) Be available to help – but don’t take over the work
8) Set realistic and positive goals
9) Speak positively about the teachers-be supportive of the position of authority they hold. Listen to your child but talk to the teacher.
Homework includes the practice and reinforcement of skills as well as the preparation and application of new curriculum content. Parental support and involvement has a direct impact on a child’s school success. Homework assignments provide the opportunity for you to see and support what your child does in school and provides an extension of the classroom setting. Make homework and homework time a priority. Establish a routine, provide a regular time and place for homework each evening.
Each classroom teacher will outline homework expectations early in the school year. As a guideline children should have about 10 minutes of homework in grade 1 and increasing by about 10 minutes per grade. Even on evenings when children claim to have "no homework", time should be spent reviewing class work, reading, math facts, or discussing what was learned in school.
The agenda is an excellent organizational tool which assists in planning school work, recording homework and assignments, remembering special or needed items, time management, and communicating with the teacher. Students should keep their agendas up to date and parents are encouraged to review the agenda on a regular, if not daily, basis.
Test preparation is essential. Encourage your child to begin test preparation in advance of the test. Have them look over their notes, text books or spelling words daily. Review should include skimming and scanning previously read text, new vocabulary and terminology, identifying key points or main ideas as well as focusing on important details and facts, and constructing study notes. Help them to budget and schedule their study time over several nights so that there is not last minute panic or cramming. Do the same with projects, there is nothing worse than rushing around when the cry for Bristol board is heard late in the evening the night before the project is due.
Some web-based tools can help with school work and the students can access these sites from home. To access student link web sites go to http/www.tcdsb/academics_it/studentlink/.
Any requests for homework for an ill child should be made in the morning to allow the teacher time to prepare the work for pick up by dismissal time. Classroom instruction and homework go hand in hand and it may not be possible for the absent child to successfully complete all of the work assigned to the class.
Surf Right Policy:
The TCDSB provides for student and staff use of an electronic communication system. Teachers will instruct students about specific rules for using TCDSB electronic systems including the Internet, the Intranet and e-mail. Students are expected to follow rules and procedures and may use TCDSB equipment only after a Student Access Agreement is signed and filed at the school. Parents may view the TCDSB policy at www.tcdsb.org under Surf Right.
A Disciplinary process is in place should there be a failure to comply with the TCDSB Surf Right Policy. For example the student password may be disabled for failing to follow teacher instructions and directions for computer use; viewing, creating and/or circulating inappropriate or offensive materials or using computers without teacher permission or supervision.
Children need to know and use responsible on-line behaviour. Cyber-bullying or the spreading of malicious messages or images is not uncommon. This hurtful behaviour is often cloaked under the guise of "freedom of speech" or anonymity. We strongly suggest that at home computers be located in highly visible areas and the use of MSN or other chat rooms be monitored closely. Talk to your child about their online activities and friends just as you would talk to them about their other activities.
School, Home and Parish:
St. Teresa Catholic School staff assists you the parent/guardian and the parish in faith growth and development as well as sacramental preparation. We celebrate Liturgy as a school every month throughout the school year. All families are encouraged to attend Mass regularly on Sundays and to pray with their children.
You, at home, provide the foundation for the faith development of your child or children through active participation in Church and prayer. Parents, you are the primary religious educators of your child both through instruction and example. We are associated with St. Teresa Catholic Church and one of the roles of the parish is to provide immediate preparation for sacraments and to administer the sacraments. Information regarding sacraments will be provided to parents of children in grades 2 and 8 as these are sacramental years. Children in grade 2 prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist while students in grade 8 prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. We at the school provide the initial preparation for the children through the use of the We Belong to the Lord Jesus grade 2 catechetical program. Just a reminder that sacraments are a parish not a school celebration.
Home and School:
Open lines of communication between home and school are essential. A monthly newsletter/calendar is sent home to keep you informed of coming events as well as items of concern or interest. You can expect the newsletter/calendar at the start of each month. If your child does not bring home a newsletter, copies are available in the office. Professional activity or development days are noted in the newsletter/calendar and generally no other forms of reminder are sent home.
Talk to your child about their school day and do not accept "nothing" as an answer to the question "what did you do at school today?" Rest assured that they did do something! Let them know that you care about their schoolwork.
We also strive to keep you informed of classroom or academic difficulties on a timely basis so that we may work towards a quick resolution of any difficulties. We do have School Based Support Team (SBST) meetings three times a year. This is a more formal meeting with the principal, teacher and special education teacher(s) to discuss how we can best work together to help you child. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s teacher. If your child is absent and you require homework, please provide adequate notice for this. It is not reasonable to call at the end of the day and expect work to be ready for dismissal time.
Conflict or disagreement is an almost inevitable part of social behaviour. However, how these situations are handled is most important. Lines of communication need to remain open even if you disagree. Remember that there are at least two sides to every story-your child certainly has a side to tell as does the other person involved. Please make sure that you contact your child’s teacher and listen to both sides before reacting or arriving at a conclusion.
Catholic School Council (CSAC):
The St. Teresa Catholic School Council is an advisory group offering recommendations and advice to the school principal on various aspects of the school. The main purpose of the school council is to improve student achievement and enhance accountability through active participation of parents in all aspects of student life.
St. Teresa Catholic School has a most active and dedicated council. Regular meetings are scheduled are noted in the monthly calendar. An Annual General Meeting as well as an election for School Council executive members in held in the fall. Notices and other important information are posted on the bulletin board in the main foyer. School based fundraising is carried out under the jurisdiction and supervision of the principal and is often a joint project with CSAC. Participation of students in fundraising is strongly encouraged. Annual financial summaries of all fundraising activities are prepared and presented to the community at the regular scheduled CSAC meetings.
At St. Teresa Catholic School we welcome parent volunteers in our school programs and activities. We have been fortunate to have enthusiastic and committed parents who willingly contributed their time and effort to our school. Your participation in the school will inevitably enhance the learning environment of the school. The TCDSB policy does mandate that anyone wishing to volunteer on a regular basis must have a Criminal Background Check completed prior to being able to volunteer.
From time to time we might have student volunteers from the local secondary schools. These students work under the direction and guidance of the classroom teacher.
Students teachers may also be present for a time in your child’s classroom. Student teachers are supervised by the classroom teacher and provide opportunity for your child to experience another teacher.
Students are to leave all valuables at home. This includes cards, collections, radios, CD players, cell phones and other electronic equipment. These items are extremely difficult to locate after they are lost. Please note that the Board’s Insurance Policy does not cover the property owned by staff or students! The TCDSB policy does permit cell phones, however, when at the school the phones must be turned off and put away. If your child is found using the cell phone during the day it will be taken away from him/her and a call made to the parent/guardian informing them of the situation.
