Attawapiskat Programs

By spring 2016, the Senior Boys Soccer Team at Bishop Marracco/Thomas Merton, also known as the "Royals", had been named the TDCAA indoor soccer champs and TDCAA outdoor soccer champs. In addition to working and playing hard on the soccer field, the team wanted to take on a passion project, after learning about a community in need in northern Ontario.
In less than four weeks, the team raised over $25,000 in funds and donations of equipment and clothing to support the students of Attawapiskat First Nation. The team and coach Paulo Pereira visited Attawapiskat from June 23-30, 2016 (shortly after being named bronze medalists at OFSAA) to implement a soccer camp at the school with the local recreation coordinator. Big sponsors for their campaign were Canadian Tire, Toronto FC and ParticipACTION and Coca Cola.
A video of their experience, “The Parting of the Rocks”,  gives a glimpse of the team’s experience at Attawapiskat. Click here to watch The Parting of the Rocks.
This first trip was just the beginning of BMTM’s relationship with Attawapiskat First Nation. View the other pages to learn more about the other trips and programs BMTM students have carried out since 2016.
