Toronto Catholic District School Board

Community Action

Poster for Peace and Justice Week

Bishop Marrocco Thomas Merton has a rich tradition of service to the community and faith-based action for social justice.  Our school was featured in the Toronto Star and CBC News when students would stand on the corner of Dundas and Bloor in vociferous protest over the Oil Wars of the 1990s.  Students learned that social justice is a integral component of Catholic education and a life lived in Christ’s light.

That active tradition still  continues today.  Students at Marrocco Merton are involved in serving the homeless at the Good Shepherd Refuge.  They have worked with Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots organization to clean the Lake Ontario waterfront.  They are passionate about campaigns to Adopt A Village through Free The Children.  This program matches schools in Canada with schools in the developing world to build new schools, provide clean water sources and enable children to go to school by giving their parents alternative employment programs.

Some of the initiatives that we are working on in our school this year are:

Halloween For Hunger (collecting canned food for the Food Bank)
Peace and Justice Week (November 9th to 13th)
Vow of Silence on November 20th (solidarity with children who have no voice)
One Night Out February 23rd 2015 (solidarity with the homeless)
Barefoot Walk April 23rd 2015 (solidarity with impoverished)

Do small things with Great Love.” Mother Teresa
