Toronto Catholic District School Board

Sustainability

One of the outward signs of Marrocco Merton’s commitment to a sustainable future is the massive greenhouse that is visible from the busy intersection of Dundas Street West and Bloor Street.  Care for our planet and care for future generations is part of our educational mandate at the Toronto Catholic District School Board. When we understand the links between consumption of goods in our local community and the impact this has on the global community, we are called as people of faith to act.  Pope Benedict XVI, in his 2008 Message for the World Day of Peace, observed: “For the human family, this home is the earth, the environment that God the Creator has given us to inhabit with creativity and responsibility. We need to care for the environment: it has been entrusted to men and women to be protected and cultivated with responsible freedom, with the good of all as a constant guiding criterion”

That’s why Bishop Marrocco Merton has begun the process to gain eco-certification for our school.  This process involves creating awareness in the school community about responsible consumption of energy and reducing our school’s carbon footprint.  Turning off lights, computers when not in use, eliminating use of plastic water bottles and switching to re-usable drinking containers are all part of the plan to create a sustainable future.

Our curriculum also reflects our commitment to sustainability.  At the grade ten level there are courses in science that use environmental examples to teach scientific principles.  In our technology program, the introductory program has a unit on green technologies.  Each of these courses allows our students to feel empowered to change their environment for the better.

Here’s the recent results of our Energy Audit for the school.
