St. Malachy CSAC and Toronto Police Service Presents: Living and Learning in the New Media Age
Feb 27th/2014 from 6 to 9 pm at St. Malachy School
St. Malachy CSAC & Toronto Police will be hosting a gala event at the school, designed to
inform parents on how technology is being used in the classroom and the importance of a collaborative working environment.  We are very pleased to welcome Peter Aguiar, TCDSB’s Coordinator of 21st Century Learning, speaking about the Board’s vision and plans, providing examples of technology applications in the classroom and answering our questions.  The evening is also the Toronto Region launch of Fraud Prevention Month. The event will be live streamed and will include presentations, breakout sessions, informational booths and prize giveaways. Seven breakout sessions will be offered and topics of discussion include protecting yourself from financial crimes, cyber fraud, counterfeit detection, and other consumer fraud.
We encourage parents to sign up for the topic of your choice ASAP to avoid disappointment since spaces are limited. Spaces are available for our parent community and their friends and family but only for students in grades 7 and above. Each person attending must register for the event. Please register online at the following link, or call the school (416-393-5336) directly and they will register for you.
This evening will provide an incredible forum to interact with other parents at the school and friends in our community, exchange ideas and ask questions of specialists.  We hope to see you there!
The agenda for the event is as follows:
6:00-6:30 p.m. Arrival and visiting booths (hallway and gymnasium)
6:30-6:45 p.m. Opening Remarks: 21st Century Learning and Fraud Prevention Month (gymnasium)

Light refreshments will be served.

Healthy Kids - Questionnaire on Menu Labelling and Marketing of Unhealthy Food to Children
(posted Oct 28th/2013)
Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care committed to aggressively taking on the challenge of reducing
childhood obesity across the province.  As a first step, the government appointed a Healthy Kids Panel.
The panel made a series of recommendationsin its report released in March 2013.
In response to the Healthy Kids Panel’s recommendations for reducing childhood obesity, Ontario has launched
a cross-government Healthy Kids Strategy. To help create a healthier food environment in Ontario, the government
is consulting with parents, the health sector, and the food and restaurant industry on two initiatives:
    •  Restrict the marketing of high-calorie, low nutrient foods, beverages and snacks to children under age 12.
    •  Require all large chain restaurants, including fast food outlets and retail grocery stores that sell prepared foods,
to list the calories in each item on their menus and to make this information visible on menu boards.
This online questionnaire is an opportunity for Ontario residents to provide their opinions on the implementation of
these recommendations. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is anonymous.
The survey is now live and will be open until November 8, 2013.
