Toronto Catholic District School Board

Catholic Education Week 2012
His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins launched the week with a Skype conversation with students from Blessed Cardinal Newman and St. Theresa Shrine
The experience we at Blessed Cardinal Newman recently had of skyping with His Eminence Cardinal Collins was certainly one that we feel privileged to have had. As our school in fellowship with the rest of the Toronto Catholic District School Board shifts our focus towards our faith as it relates to our learning environment through Catholic Education Week, this conversation with His Eminence was an opportunity to gain insight into the best way that our school community can live out our discipleship. The words of advice given to the students gathered when asked what message would the Cardinal give to young people, was that of the importance of taking time for personal prayer and reflection in our everyday lives. In a world often too fast in the pace to which life is lived this message resonated with our school community in the constant attempt we as Catholics must make to improve our spiritual lives and our relationship with God. In his ever personable nature, His Eminence graciously shared with us his own story with regards to his vocation towards the priesthood. Shared as well with the students gathered were recommendations by His Eminence towards the best way that we as a Catholic community in learning may best assist in helping students to discern spiritual vocations; through an availability of information and the sharing of experience by those we look to for spiritual guidance. The very use of skype by the Cardinal as a means of social media by which faith sharing may occur is an indication that the traditions of The Church will continue on and will thrive in the technological age. We at Cardinal Newman have truly been blessed through this experience and our school continues in its journey with Christ as part of our faith centred learning community and as a part of our Church, with which this experience has enriched and reminded us of.
