Scarborough soccer players nominated for national awards  Tue., Dec 08, 2015

A number of Scarborough soccer players are in the running for national honours in the Canada Soccer awards.

Along with such well-known Scarborough players as men’s national team member Julian de Guzman (attended Newman from 1994-1997) and Fraser Aird of the Glascow Rangers, other local nominees for the 2015 BMO Canadian Players of the Year award nominees include Duwayne Ewart, Vital Kats and Deanne Rose.

Scarborough’s Ewart is nominated in the U17 men’s category. He plays club soccer with the Vaughan Soccer Club. Both Kats and Rose are members of the U17 women’s Scarborough GS United team.

Ewart has been playing for local soccer clubs in Scarborough for a number of years and that has given him the opportunity to recently be part of the Vancouver Whitecaps youth development program. He was recently a member of the U17 squad that represented Canada at the CONCACAF Championship in Honduras where he was the top Canadian goal scorer.

Voting for the awards is split between media and coaches from across Canada, and voting is open until Friday, Dec. 11.
