The Toronto Catholic District School Board announced on November 9th that funding has been approved for a new replacement facility for Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School.

The Ontario Government is committing $30 million to construct a modern, state-of-the-art complex with learning spaces for 1,110 students. TCDSB Ward 12 Trustee Nancy Crawford and Lorenzo Berardinetti, Member of Provincial Parliament for Scarborough Southwest shared the good news with the school community today.

“I am very grateful to the Ministry of Education for recognizing the needs of this community.” says Trustee Crawford a long-time advocate for a new building. “With crumbling infrastructure and 20 portables on site, a new school was the only logical option to benefit not just students, but the entire community in Southwest Scarborough.”

Nestled against a backdrop of mature trees on a magnificent 45 acre campus overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs and Lake Ontario, Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic School is located on a historic site shared with St. Augustine's Seminary.

“We all know today’s high schools are also valuable community hubs where everyone can come to both learn and play, which is why it has been one of my priorities and that of the government of Ontario.” says MPP Berardinetti.

The building of a new Blessed Cardinal Newman is part of the TCDSB’s continuing investment in new school facilities to support student achievement and well-being. This project is part of the Board’s ambitious capital plan which includes the construction of new facilities, as well as a commitment for significant improvements to existing schools.

“Our focus remains on student achievement and well-being. A new and modern school facility for Blessed Cardinal Newman will provide for an even wider range of learning opportunities for our students.” says Board Chair Michael Del Grande
