Destination ImagiNation
Congratulations to all the teams who participated in the Destination ImagiNation® Ontario Tournament on Saturday March 26th, 2011; six teams of grade 5-8 students (34 students in total!) will compete at the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee which will be held on May 25-28, 2011. A special Thank you to Mrs. Bazzocchi and all the parent volunteers who guided the teams to their incredible performances; good luck to all student participants who will represent Blessed Sacrament!
Green Team
Student ambassadors and teacher volunteers successfully recertified Blessed Sacrament as an EcoSchool (silver certification) as of May 2010 (Blessed Sacrament received it's first EcoSchool certification in May 2009). Our goal is to achieve gold certification for the 2010/2011 school year!
Earth Hour On Friday March 25th, our Green Team led our school in the Earth Hour Challenge; from 10am to 11am, Blessed Sacrament turned off all external lights, reduced hallway lights to minimum lighting, turned off classroom lights, eliminated all non-essential lights in staff areas, and shut down all computers; students were also asked to bring a litterless lunch. Thank you for your support!
Think Recycle program has started again and students are asked to bring in old ink cartridges, cell phones, MP3 players, and digital cameras to be recycled. For every 24 items we recycle, a tree will be planted in our honour; we also receive monetary credit for each item brought in (from $0.30 to $1). Last year, the community recycled 120 ink cartridges, 37 cell phones which diverted 59.44lbs of waste; we also received $126.70 from our recycled goods!
Litterless Lunch Wednesdays Students will receive 2 tickets to the monthly raffle if their lunch is 100% litterless and 1 ticket if their drink container is reusable. Two ticket holders will be randomly selected on the last Wednesday of the month to win prizes!
Greening initiatives took place at the entrance of Kindergarten Alley in the Spring of 2010 and will in Spring of 2011. Thank you to the Green Team members who worked to plant the perennials on Friday June 11th around the Flagpole!
Me to We
A group of 13 students, Ms. Quinn and Mrs. Cerre attended the "2010 Me Day" at Air Canada Centre on Thursday September 30th. The event kicks off a year-long program for change, called We Schools in Action, inspiring a generation to care about social justice and to take action on local and international issues. They have sponsored the Halloween for Hunger Campaign where they donated huge boxes of your donated canned food to the North York Harvest Food Bank. They also sponsored the highly successful Snowball Dancewith net proceeds of $5,200 that will go toward the construction of a new windmill that will bring clean water to a remote village outside of Tanzania, East Africa; students from TCDSB high schools will build the windmill this summer through the CPPS Water projects ( Thank you!
Book Club
The Book Club started on Tuesday November 4th, 2010 and is open to all students from grade 4 to 8; they meet in the school library during lunch recess every Tuesday in November and bi-weekly starting in December. The Book Club will participate in the Forest of Reading Project which involves reading 10 books during the year and then voting on their favorite book at the conclusion of the Book Club. Thank you to our teacher coordinators for leading the club!
Chess Club
