On Thursday, February 9th Brebeuf College gathered to recognize the contributions by students who lived their faith through virtuous action (Hospitality, Gratitude, Peace, Charity and Courage.) We honoured the contributions of these young men to their families, schools, and churches and their brothers in Christ. These young men have shown, throughout the course of this semester that God’s grace can be channeled through our youth to do good in our communities. These virtues often require great amounts of sacrifice, suffering, and humility. When we look at the life of the saints, such as Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, and Francis of Assisi, we notice their piety and holiness, but also their compassion, meekness, and love of neighbour. We aspire to be like these people because they took their faith and put it into practice. As Christ called these people to a life of sanctity, so too must we in order to become the men and women He wants us to be. Through vocational discernment, and through prayer and good works, those virtues can become entrenched in the very fibre of our being. I think that Thursday’s event, while an excellent commemoration, should not be the end of service to others through virtuous action, but only the start. It’s a trampoline that will only propel us higher, in our faith, and in our actions.
