Recently, Chaminade College competed in the annual First Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC is an American based organization which seeks to promote excellence in science and technology education. Students are charged with the task of building a robot to certain specifications which competes in an arena setting against the robots of other schools, some which came from as far away as Mexico. Overall, FRC has international reach, as regional competitions are held on every continent.
This year, the robots had to shoot basketballs into a hoop, and then try to balance themselves on a rocking bridge. Not as easy as it sounds, but the boys from Chaminade were certainly up to the challenge. After three days of intense competition, the ‘Gryphons’ did their school proud by placing SECOND overall, just missing out on qualifying for the World Championships in St. Louis.
Chaminade was one of only two schools from the Toronto Catholic District School Board at FRC this year, and certainly hope that these results will inspire other schools within our Board to join the competition in the future.
