TCDSB Student Receives $5,000 towards Post-Secondary Studies
from Annual Tom Leon Bursary Award
Since 2004, the Tom Leon Charitable Foundation has been awarding $20,000 annually in student bursaries to four deserving students who require financial assistance in order to pursue studies at a post- secondary institution. The selection of the recipients is based on a variety of criteria including (but not limited to): contributions to the school and/or community that reflect Catholic values, financial need, volunteer work within the school or community, and personal challenges and obstacles.
Congratulations to Alex Escobar and Mark Marji – Chaminade College School, for being two of the four winners of this award. 
Alex Escobar is a remarkable young man who gives of his time generously and is actively involved in a variety of community initiatives. He is the Director of Equity for the Catholic Student Leadership Impact Team (CSLIT) where he is responsible for chairing the Equity Standing Committee, he organized the first annual Safe Schools Summit and is the student representative for the Chaminade Safe School Action Team. Alex has also volunteered for many other activities, including Chaminade’s Blood Donor Clinics and Transition to High School Programs in an effort to save lives, build long lasting relationships and prevent bullying. A top academic student, Alex is attending the University of Toronto in the fallTheresa Hoang from Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School and Regional Arts Centre is an exemplary student but her commitment to her studies has not stopped her from also being an active member and leader in her community. She is involved in various activities at her school, including Redmond’s Me to We club, Kiwanis Key Club, Eco Club, Peer Ministry, Sandwich Patrol, Tutor Clinic, and Redmond Respects. As President of her Student Leadership Team, Theresa does not hesitate to selflessly share her God-given gifts with others. She recently participated in an overseas trip to Kenya where she spent weeks living and working with a village outside of Nairobi. It was through this experience that Theresa understood how truly blessed she is and strives every day to give back to her community. She will attend the University of Toronto in September.
Mark Marji  has shown outstanding leadership qualities in his school and community. He has accumulated over 1,000 volunteer hours while still maintaining honour roll status with a grade average of over 90%. Mark is an ambitious young man with a desire to make a positive change in his community. A volunteer for the North York Harvest Food Bank and Our Lady of Victory parish’s Youth Impact Team, Mark has a genuine concern for the greater good. Mark is also involved in his school community as a member of the Model United Nations Club, Stop the Stigma Mental Health Team and Safe Schools Action Team; Director of Public Relations for the school newspaper, The Diplomat; and President of Chaminade’s Student Council. He will attend Ryerson University in the fall.
About the Tom Leon Charitable Foundation
Motivated by his desire to help those who are less fortunate, in need, or of ill health, Mr. Tom Leon established The Tom Leon Charitable Foundation in January, 1999. Since 2004, The Foundation has established annual post-secondary bursaries within The Angel Foundation for Learning to be awarded to four students pursuing a college or university education. In addition, The Foundation has established an Emergency Family Support Fund for those families within the Toronto Catholic District School Board, who, due to exceptional circumstances, require financial support. The Foundation also provides support to two other School Boards in Ontario.
