Dante Students Visit Parliament Hill

On April 3rd, 2019 students from the Canadian and World Studies Department at Dante Alighieri Academy attended an invite to Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The students attended an invite called “Youth on the Hill”. Senior students in the Canadian and World Studies Department were invited by Marco Mendicino, MP (Eglington/Lawrence) to attend this event on Parliament Hill.
The student delegation from Dante consisted of Grade 12 Law and History students. When they arrived in Ottawa, they completed a tour of ‘West Block” in the House of Commons where they experienced ‘Question Period’ in the spectator room. The students also spent time in the ‘Room of Remembrance’ observing quietly all the names of soldiers who died defending democracy and freedom. This also included names of soldiers from the War of 1812 and soldiers from Newfoundland.
The students were also asked to attend a question and answer session in the ‘Committee Room’ in the west block of Parliament. They had an opportunity to ask questions to three Member’s of Parliament. Marco Mendicino, MP (Eglinton-Lawrence), Jennifer O’Connell, MP (Pickering-Uxbridge) and Kamal Khera, MP (Brampton West) attended the question session. The students asked questions on topics such as the Environment, Jobs, Immigration and Gender Equity.
This experience allowed students to better understand government, leadership and Civic responsibility. We are very proud of our delegates from Dante Alighieri Academy.
