Toronto Catholic District School Board

Principal's Message

Dear Members and Friends of the Henry Carr Community,

Our first semester has been a successful and productive one both in the classroom and beyond. Our teachers continue to collaborate and focus their efforts on improving student achievement. Our math department has partnered with Don Bosco and local public high schools to improve learning for grade nine math students at the applied level. We are also involved in a School Support Initiative [SSI] with the Ministry of Education and high schools across Ontario to plan, improve, and monitor student achievement. Our semester one focus was a success as our teachers noted improvement in the reading comprehension of our grade 9 students studying at the applied English and geography levels.

Spiritually, we have provided thoughtful and reflective moments over the past months. Our DDME students were able to build the altar at our Thanksgiving Mass with the food cans donated by the Carr community. We also decorated the altar with a “Memory Wall” for our Memorial Mass which was celebrated by Father George Smith CSB, who shared the vision of our founder, Father Henry Carr. We also started 2 new traditions at Carr - THE STUDENTS’ CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST with the support and generosity of our teaching and non-teaching staff who prepared and served breakfast to the entire student body. And the CARR CARES CHRISTMAS TREE on which mittens, gloves, scarves, and toques were hung and then collected for the needy in our local community.  Our Me to We group participated in the Kickoff at the Air Canada Center, and our senior students prepared and served meals for the poor at the St. Francis Table in downtown Toronto.

Our Congregated Advanced Placement Program is now in its sixth year with students taking Pre-AP classes in grades 9, 10, and 11 in all core subject areas, as well as our grade 12 AP classes. As a Regional Centre for Congregated AP, we continue to attract highly-motivated students from the North Etobicoke area and beyond. Research has shown that students in the high-school AP program outperform their counterparts in university. Our students will benefit tremendously by being in the Pre-AP and AP classes as well as writing the AP exams in May, allowing them the opportunity to earn first-year credits at universities throughout the world. We will be admitting another 60 grade 9 students into the Pre-AP program for September 2012.

This semester, we have introduced our monthly GEMS [Gifted Enriched Motivated Students] Meetings which present upcoming enrichment opportunities and trips. Within this UPDATE, you will read about the conferences, places, and more in which our students have participated.

Co-curricular activities thrived this semester. Our student newspaper was revived with the debut issue of CARRSTRUCK, published and distributed in December. The Starlight Strut Fashion Show initiated by grade 12 student, Maya More. was a tremendous success. Table Tennis has also become a popular new activity after school in Mohan Hall. The ARTS continue to flourish as the DRUMLINE gave a spectacular performance in the Christmas Play at the Church on the Queensway. Our senior art students are planning and have begun painting murals on school walls, and our drama students are busily preparing for the SEARS Drama festival which we are hosting in the Meffe Cafetorium. The high-energy Dance Team is looking forward to its upcoming competitions.  Our student council members have provided strong leadership and spirit-building activities.

Lunch-time intramurals continue to be a crowd pleaser and our Phys. Ed students are developing their leadership and outreach skills with our Catholic elementary schools where they provide programming and relationship-building activities. And big CONGRATULATIONS to our senior boys’ football team and our junior girls’ basketball teams who, in thrilling fashion, captured the Tier 2 Championships!

Parents and students, please review the report-card results. We are committed to student success and need the cooperation and support of the home to help each one of our students meet his/her potential. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact the subject teachers, resource department, guidance counselors, or our student success team who will provide feedback and direction.

Special thanks to our communications technology students who have created this edition of the CARR UPDATE and to all parents/guardians for your ongoing support. We look forward to the upcoming months at FHC!

May God bless you and your families,
