As James Cardinal McGuigan continues to build on its relationship with York University through the A.C.E. (Advanced Credit Experience) Program https://www.tcdsb.org/schools/jamescardinalmcguigan/AboutUs/Documents/James%20Cardinal%20McGuigan%20CHS%20-%20Advanced%20Credit%20Experience%20Program.pdf, the university is providing students the opportunity to receive assistance in an attempt to improve their literacy skills through the Readers 2 Leaders (R2L) Program.

The program is free of charge and runs every Saturday for 16 weeks with breakfast, lunch and bus tickets for transportation to and from the university provided. The first session was held on Saturday, November 2, 2019.

The primary objective of this program is to provide additional support to grade ten students who are experiencing challenges or wish to improve their overall literacy skills in preparation for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).  As we all know, grade 10 students across the province of Ontario must successfully pass the OSSLT in order to receive their OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma).

This partnership also allows students to become better acquainted with the university campus in their community and helps to strengthen their confidence and critical thinking skills outside of their high school classrooms.

At the end of the program, students will receive a certificate of completion, be better prepared for the literacy test in the spring, and will have a connection to an established post-secondary institution in Toronto.

We here at James Cardinal McGuigan are proud to send 53 committed students to the Readers 2 Leaders (R2L) Program.  The commitment by York University to schools in the Jane-Finch community speaks volumes to their pledge to provide literacy support to learners within the area.
