 Sense & Sensabilities

Scientest 2014 Gr 1.jpgGrade 1 students learned about the power of their senses on November 26, 2014.  They discovered sound waves while exploring the sense of hearing and tested their sense of taste. They created scratch and sniff pictures to learn about their sense of smell and tried to “see” with their hands to explore the sense of touch. They learned how light helps us see and even some simple phrases in sign language.

Thank you to the Grade 8 students for being such Sense-ational  Scientists!

Sense & Sensabilities

During the week of November 11, 2013, the grade one students were Sense-ational Scientists.  Scientist Carolyn helped the students explore their 5 senses with many hands on activities.

Using compound glasses they saw the world through a bug’s eye and using prism glasses they saw that light is made up of the colours of the rainbow. The students tasted many different flavours and smelled fragrances to make themselves a scratch and sniff puzzle. While blindfolded, the students tried to guess hidden objects. A big success was the experiments using different size megaphones to hear the loudness of each other’s voices. As well, the students learned to say “I love you” in sign language.  It was a wonderful conclusion to the grade one Science unit on Living Systems.

Many thanks to our enthusiastic grade 8 assistants. As well, thank you to the Parent Council for their support in funding our next two presentations.
