Pysanky - Traditional Easter Egg Writing

Each year students at JoPysanky 8.jpgsyf Cardinal Slipyj School look forward to the Easter Pysanka writing activity. This is an old tradition of egg decoration, dating back to pre-Christian times. With Christianity the egg came to symbolize new spiritual life through Christ’s Resurrection.

Students draw traditional symbols which each have their own special meaning and significance as do the colours they choose to apply to the egg. This whole process uses the BATIK method of applying beeswax with a kystka followed by a dye bath and then careful removal of wax brings the design and colour of the pysanka to life.

The Pysanky are placed carefully in the traditional Easter basket which is taken to church on Easter Sunday to be blessed.  Often, you will find the words Христос Воскрес – Воістину Воскрес,  which means Christ is Risen – Indeed He is Risen written on the pysanka.
