Shevchenko Commemoration

On Thursday, March 6, 2014 our school community marked the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birthdate with a simple yet very moving commemoration. During the ceremony Khrystyna Pakish spoke of his many hardships, his love for nature, his poetic and artistic talents and fittingly his connection to the Ukrainian people who today are still fighting for true democratic freedom on the majdan. SK students; Solomiya Kyrychynska, Solomiya Matsura, Krystyna Mykush, Nicoya Ryshkevich, Sophia Shevchuk and Svitlana Strykovska sang a very heartwarming tribute –“Поклін Тобі Тарасе “ to our great Ukrainian poet and visionary. We thank all our Ukrainian department teachers for their assistance and in particular Pani Zurakowski, Pani Lazirko and Pani Ostapienko for preparing our students for this special day of recognition.

This year the Ukrainian Canadian Art Foundation – КУМФ, KONTAKT Ukrainian T.V. Studio and Ukrainian Credit Union jointly sponsored a Canada-wide art competition in recognition of Taras Shevchenko’s 200th year anniversary entitled “Мій Шевченко”.  Some of our talented artists in the making submitted beautiful artwork and we are proud to say we had 40 entries.

Exhibit opening and award ceremony will take place at KUMF (2118-A Bloor Str. W.) on Friday, March 28, 2014 @ 7:00 p.m.
