Feast of Jordan

On January 18, 2013, the students at JCS School celebrated the Feast of Jordan or  Theophany.  This feast day commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan by St. John the Baptist, depicted in the icon.   Father Lobay, from St. Nicholas Church, came to our school to perform a very unique service - the Blessing of the WaterTraditionally, this rite would have been performed in the cold winter air on a frozen river.  Ice would have been cut out in the form of a cross and the service sung around the cross of ice exposing the river below.

The students helped Father sing the special prayers during the blessing. All were blessed by Fr. Lobay with the Holy water after the ceremony.  Each student takes home a bottle of (blessed) Holy water and as is customary, partakes of it as they would Holy Communion - with great reverence!
