Holodomor Day 2018

This year’s Holodomor Commemoration Assembly took place on Thursday November 22, 2018 in the gym. The assembly commenced with a Panachyda (memorial service) and then continued with a power point presentation.

One of or school traditions is the sharing of bread with JCS classmates. Bread (small bun) was shared with students to reflect on the tragedy of this event.

The other tradition is the preparation of the flower symbol of the Holodomor – the blue and yellow forget-me-not.  All of the student flowers were used to create a large “wreath” commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine.  The years of the worst of the famine were 1932 to 1933.  The Holodmor was a result of ethnic cleansing – where millions of Ukrainians, including children, were starved to death on purpose.

Josyf Cardinal Slipyj students participated this week on this tragic event.
We pray for all the victims of the Holodomor.
