Abbey
Students Dominate Math Contest
By: Ariel Corsano, Student Reporter

McMaster University’s annual Math @ Mac Online Math Competition is
open to students of all grades and is designed to engage and challenge students
in mathematics through problem solving. This year, a total of 915 teams from 57
schools competed, both domestically and internationally. Among these
competitors, Loretto Abbey students stood out by taking home the top seven
places in the grade eleven category!
Baijia Li was the school champion, coming in first place among all
the grade elevens who competed. Dandan Tan and Hongxuan Wang placed second and
third, with each of the top three students winning a monetary prize for their
phenomenal achievement. Additionally, Yujie Ma, Lanting Chen, Xinqi Meng, and
Ningxin Kong received honourable mentions for their outstanding scores.
Succeeding in math contests not only demonstrates excellent
mathematical competency, but also strong analytical thinking skills, which are
highly valued among universities and employers.
“We are proud of our Grade elevens’
accomplishments,” said Mr. Shaun Hussain, Department Head of
Mathematics.
“We look forward to their continued success in
future math contests this year.”
Congratulations to the winners and to all of the students who
wrote the contest for their continued effort and excellence! Thank you to the
math department, especially to Mr. Hussain and Dr. Kuriyan, for organizing the
contests and encouraging students to partake in these enrichment opportunities.
The school’s support of its students through such opportunities is essential to
the spirit of Loretto Abbey and its commitment to helping students reach their
full potential.
