Camp White Pine 2017

Deep in the heart of the White Pine Jungle...

By: Christina C., Grade Nine Student Reporter

From September 27 to 29, grade nine Loretto Abbey students travelled to Camp White Pine for their annual retreat led by student council and grade 12 leaders. This retreat was a chance to show school spirit and meet other members of the class of 2021.

Students were separated into colour teams for cabins and activities. In each colour, they created and performed a lip-sync dance and cheer and participated in many fun games. Camp White Pine allowed students to be themselves, cheer so loud that most lost their voices, make new friends, and create memories that will last forever. Everyone was in full spirit by wearing their given colour and singing along to songs.

“Camp White Pine was an amazing three days to bond with grade nines and collaborate with the other grade 12 leaders. The grade nine students embody the true spirit of the Abbey and will be a group of exceptional leaders for years to follow,” said Rosa Campagna, a grade 12 leader.

The three days were filled with fun and inspiration. During camp, students were motivated by two guest speakers. Scott Hammell, an entertainer and magician, gave an important message to never give up through his story on how he learned to juggle explosives. Brett Ullman, a public speaker and educator, gave an influential talk on dating in high school. The students also took time to praise God at a mass led by Father Delaney and Mr. Femia.

On the last day of camp, the grade nine representative elections took place. Each of the 18 nominees gave a speech and the vote began. Sophia Emiliani was announced as the grade nine representative for 2017-2018.

“My experience at Camp White Pine was amazing with everyone bonding and having fun! When I got chosen for grade nine rep, it was wonderful because I can be the voice for all grade nines. I think it was the best three days,” said Sophia. Congratulations to Sophia and all the nominees!

Student Council planned the event and did an amazing job in doing so. They made the camp experience for all the grade nines memorable and enjoyable. A big thank you goes to student council, Ms. Chiera, Mr. Muia, and Mr. Malvaso for organizing the grade nine overnight retreat, as well as the grade 12 leaders and teacher supervisors who took time out of school to be there with the grade nines and made Camp White Pine such a success. Thank you to Camp White Pine staff for hosting and providing us with the camp grounds for the retreat. Camp White Pine is a tradition at the Abbey that is loved by all and will hopefully continue for many years to come.
