Halloween Harvest

By: Chloe A. and Meralgyn C.

Halloween for Hunger is a Loretto Abbey annual food drive that takes place during the Halloween season in collaboration with the North York Harvest Food Drive. By donating either non-perishable food items or two dollars, students have the option to dress up for Halloween or to wear black and orange civvies while helping a worthy cause.

Since the October virtue of the month is Gratitude, it is only fitting that we show our gratitude by giving back to our community. Halloween for Hunger is a school tradition started by the ESP student club. Members of this club, make announcements leading up to Halloween and then collect money and nonperishable food items. The food donated goes to feed people who are hungry. The money goes towards our school charity, which is the Tanzania Project, a Loreto Kishiri HIV/AIDS Clinic.

ESP students go to the North York Harvest Food Bank to help sort food donations. This gave them a sense of understanding on how our school’s donations are used and appreciated. Mrs. Remba, the faculty supervisor, was delighted by our work as “seeing that encourages us to keep doing what we do to help our community. It helps the girls appreciate life.”
