“Boys and girls of every age... Wouldn’t you like to see something strange?” These lyrics from The Nightmare Before Christmas have probably been stuck in everyone’s head for the past month in anticipation of Halloween, the spooky holiday we like to celebrate with scary movies, wild costumes, and of course, sweet treats! Halloween at the Abbey is quite a spectacle, where teachers and students alike get involved! By paying two dollars or giving two cans of food, many students at Loretto Abbey were able to dress up and show off their fun costumes.

This year, Student Council hosted a costume contest in which they picked an individual and a group costume winner from each grade. Everyone’s costumes were very creative and unique.  Walking into the Junior Cafeteria, I could already see a very convincing Dr. Facilier from the Princess and the Frog, an angel, a videogame character, and a zombie. Mr. Malvaso and Mr. Muia even went as Chaminade Boys doing promposals! This year, a few friends and I decided to dress up as a group of teenagers from the fifties - poodle skirts and all! I have no doubt that Council had a difficult choice to make when they decided the winners of their contest. Apart from Council’s costume contest, our school also held a food drive in support of MetoWe’s Halloween for Hunger initiative.

Some of you may be feeling a little down now that autumn is almost over and Halloween has ended, but December, a.k.a. Christmas is just around the corner! It may still be November but getting an early start is never a bad thing. It’s time to put away The Exorcist and your jack-o-lantern, and start dusting off your Home Alone movies, hot chocolate, and boughs of holly!
