On January 14th, Ms. Pinto's Grade 11 ENG 3U class took their novel study to the next level and  participated in a Skype Chat with Jesse Thistle, author of From the Ashes. This debut novel has received rave reviews since its release last summer, and is currently a contender on CBC's Canada Reads 2020 program. During the Skype chat Thistle read an excerpt from his book to the class and students had the opportunity to ask him questions. Indigenous literature can provide students with deep learning experiences, and this Skype chat further enriched the lessons in From the Ashes.

From The Ashes was selected by Ms. Pinto's students as their novel study.  It is an Indigenous piece of literature, specifically Metis. The text is a memoir about Thistle's life, his journey from homelessness and drug addiction to recovery, reconciliation, and healing. Thistle is currently a Professor at York University, and was named one of Toronto Life's 50 Most Influential Torontonians at the end of 2019.
