McLuhan Fellowship Award Winner visits Marshall McLuhan

Manuel Mogato, recipient of the 2017 McLuhan Fellowship award, spoke with students at Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School on December 7th, 2017.
Mr. Mogato won the McLuhan Fellowship for his excellent reportage and analysis of “fake news” and the state of press freedom and accountability in the Philippines.  Michael McLuhan, son of Marshall McLuhan, introduced Mr. Mogato who  addressed the Grades 11 and 12 English students to talk about fake news and its definition, and how it plays out in the media. Mr. Mogato also talked about the power of social media, and how students can discern/separate facts from fake news giving several examples of sources, gathering evidence and materials to verify story/news. The students responded with insightful questions.
The Marshall McLuhan Prize is the flagship public diplomacy initiative for the Embassy of Canada in Manila.  Launched in 1997, it encourages investigative journalism in the Philippines with the belief that a strong media is essential to a strong democratic society.
