Assessment and Standardized Testing

What is EQAO?

EQAO is the Education Quality and Accountability Office and they are responsible for Ontario’s standardized tests in Mathematics (grade 9) and literacy (grade 10). Their tests measure student achievement in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. The resulting data provide accountability and a gauge of quality in Ontario’s publicly funded education system. By providing this important evidence about learning, EQAO acts as a catalyst for increasing the success of Ontario students.

About the Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment

All students working toward a credit in Grade 9 Academic or Applied Mathematics are required to participate. These tests evaluate how well students are meeting the curriculum expectations of the Grade 9 Academic or Applied Mathematics courses from The Ontario Curriculum. The Mary Ward mathematics department strives to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge to succeed in writing the EQAO math assessment.

About the Grade 10 Literacy Test (OSSLT)

In Grade 10, students take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, which measures whether or not they are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9.

Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the 32 requirements students must meet to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The secondary school literacy requirement is described in the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12: Policy and Program Requirements, 2011.

Educators at Mary Ward continue to prepare students for the OSSLT with various programs and after school literacy help for Grade 10 students preparing to write the test.
