Toronto Public Library (TPL)

*NEW* May 12 and May 19, 2020 only!!

TPL will be running two online research skills session on Tuesday May 12 @ 4 pm and Tuesday May 19 @ 4 pm.  The content of the sessions will be the same.

For more detailed information see the event listing here.

The sessions will be held on Crowdcast and a link will be added to the event listing in the next few days. There will be NO video/audio for participants, just the ability to chat with TPL staff and to ask questions.

The focus of the session will be on accessing TPL databases for culminating research projects and will include a walk through of a database.  The session is geared to gr 11s and gr 12s but open to all! You are encouraged to attend if you want to know more about databases or online research.  As a reminder, to access TPL databases students must have an active TPL library card.

Resource 1

Teens Homework Help page (tpl.ca/homework) takes students directly to the access point of our research databases.

From there you can click on one of the featured databases or on the More databases button/link to go directly to our curated list of databases for high school students.

This should help students navigate directly to the databases for research support.

Resource 2

blog post "Homework Help: Searching Beyond Google" which helps students to understand why they may need to move from Google to databases for research and helps suggest ones that might make the most sense for them.

Please note that in order to access TPL's eResources (including databases) students will need an active library card and will have to know their PIN.  PINs are, by default, the last 4 digits of the phone number we have on record for them. If students have forgotten their PIN but have an email address on record with TPL they can still get access through the Forgot PIN? option. (Similar to forgot your password option on many websites). This can be found in the Sign In option located on the top left of TPL main page, tpl.ca
