Ward Weekly Update

For the week of Monday April 16th – Friday April 20th, 2018

Hello Parents & Guardians.  Below, please find our Mary Ward Weekly Update.  This was also sent electronically to parents/guardians through School Connects.

This is Week 30

As a reminder, the last day for students to write tests and hand in units prior to examinations is Thursday June 7th, 2018.

There is quite a bit of information to share this week with you.  As a school, we have embarked on a school-wide social justice service project to celebrate the ‘Year of the School: Doing Good Works in the name of Mary Ward.’  We kicked off this project with our students and Fr. Mike Lehman at our Easter Mass last week.  Please read below.

Year of the School: Doing Good Works in the name of Mary Ward

Our celebration of the TCDSB Year of the School has unfolded in three parts: reflecting on the mind of Mary Ward, her spirituality and deep faith, and now, her commitment to life-giving change in the world.  When our Chaplaincy Team reached out to Sr. Evanne Hunter, IBVM, she indicated that an area of tremendous and urgent need is in Kishiri, Mwanza Region, Tanzania.  Loretto sisters there are hard at work to bring a health centre to the region, close to a 10 year-old Loretto school for girls and an area affected by HIV/AIDS.  The first step is to bring clean water to Kishiri, for the people to immediately access and to allow construction of a health centre to begin on land Loretto sisters have donated.  Over the spring, we hope to raise funds for this wonderful cause; the total project involving drilling boreholes to bring water to Kishiri is $19,000 CDN, and we are aiming for one-third of that, or approximately $6500 (about $100/TA group).  Sr. Evanne and IBVM sisters from around the world will be visiting us in early June, at which time we will present our donation.  This is a wonderful opportunity for Mary Ward CSS to walk in the footsteps of our namesake, and to honour our 30th year of graduates!  Please consider giving generously as a family.  This is such an important cause and it is an opportunity for our students to see our faith in action.

This week our students and staff in the Performing Arts Department (Drama, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music) will be presenting the musical, “9 to 5”.  I can hear the rehearsing so I know it is going to be a very good show!  I am expecting that it will be sold out.  Tickets are available for $10 at lunch next week).

Due to set up for the school musical, no seating will be available inside the cafeteria this week.  Food sales will continue.  Seating will be on benches in our halls and throughout the school.

Uniform help please!!  Parents & Guardians:  We need your help.  Maintaining the proper wearing of our school uniform always requires effort on all our parts.  We seem to be having a challenge reminding our students that golf socks are NOT permitted as part of the uniform.  The same goes for wearing white or other coloured socks.  If students are wearing the kilt, students are to wear navy tights or navy knee socks.  Any other version is not acceptable.  As the better weather arrives, this will only continue to worsen unless we address this now.  We will be doing a uniform blitz for the next few weeks.  Please take a few minutes to ensure that your son or daughter has not grown out of their uniform, that the zippers still zip, that kilts are not too short, etc.…  If students have a uniform challenge, we will give students an opportunity to remediate their uniform but at some point, students will be asked to return home to collect the proper parts of their uniform.  Our uniform policy can be found on page 20 of the student agenda book.

Report cards are coming home!  Spring Report Cards will be sent home the afternoon of Monday April 16th.  Please remember that our Spring Parent-Subject Teacher interviews take place Wednesday April 18th from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.  We hope to see you then.

Lastly, the week of Sun April 15th to Sat. April 21st is Volunteer Appreciation Week.  Thank you very much to our Catholic School Parent Council for their efforts on behalf of our Mary Ward families.  It is a pleasure to work with you.  Thanks also to the many parents to assist our staff members with any number of clubs and activities that take place in our school.  We are grateful for all your help.
