Toronto Catholic District School Board

Celebrating Exemplary Practices
2011-2012 Award Winner
For the 13th year, Toronto Catholic District School Board acknowledged innovative projects and programs at TCDSB schools with the Exemplary Practice Awards, which took place on April 23rd. Among this year’s award winners was Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School for its “Green Quest/Construction Technology Vegetable Garden”.
Mary Ward is a unique school, which allows for students of different ages and abilities to work alongside one another (Green Quest club, environmental science students, construction technology students). We are also fortunate to be on city property, adjacent to the L’Amoreaux Community Centre, which allows a cross-generational partnership among students and senior citizens to take place. We hope to maintain and improve a vegetable garden which grows fresh produce without the use of pesticides to be used by seniors with multiple exceptionalities in their community centre kitchen. This project meets the personal and communal needs of students and seniors who feel the desire to make a contribution to their community and the environment.

It allows for partnerships of teens and seniors working together towards a flourishing goal. It will add more greenery around our school and make the maintenance of our garden a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
