Family Learning Comes Alive
Hands On Literacy Workshop with Famed Author Eric Walters

Parents attended an event to help them learn to work with their children at home to increase academic achievement in literacy with a variety of engaging tools. “Family Learning Comes Alive” took place on Wednesday, March 26th  at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School.

Hosted, by the Catholic School Advisory Councils of Holy Redeemer. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Precious Blood, St. Aidan, St. Albert, St. Gerald and St. Sylvester Catholic Schools, the event featured an interactive literacy workshop led by Children’s Author Eric Walters. This seven school partnership is the largest of its kind to receive a combined Parent Reaching Out Grant from the Ministry of Education.

“Parent engagement is critical to academic success,” says John Del Grande, Toronto Catholic District School Board Trustee for the area. “TCDSB values parental involvement in the life the school community, and participation in the learning process. This parent led initiative is meant as a practical way to encourage that engagement in a meaningful and practical way.”

A choir, consisting of students from each school, performed at the beginning and end of the session. A group art project was also undertaken, with three students from each school doing an art project during the event with the assistance of an art teacher and several senior secondary students. The artwork was raffled off at the end of the event.
